For some people, their fear of dentistry is so great that it prevents them from attending the dentist for regular maintenance such as an examination and professional cleaning. They will attend only when in discomfort, which in turn reinforces their fear.

We are very sympathetic to these feelings and can offer ways to you that will help you to overcome your fears through different and sucessful techniques.

When we are faced with something we are afraid of or embarrassed about, our bodies produce substances which raise our anxiety. Embarrassment is often the most common concern expressed by people who have not attended a dental practice in a very long time. We are not here to judge or lecture you on your current state of oral health but to provide a service for YOU.  Our only thoughts are to care for you so that you are comfortable and can start to overcome any dental anxieties.

Our entire professional team is trained and able to assist you to overcome these fears or concerns. The first fear to overcome is the fear of admitting to other people that you are afraid of dental treatment. Please make our front office coordinators aware when making your appointment so a caring note is recorded in your personal file. You will be asked by your dentist very early in your appointment about your fears and anxiety levels, please feel comfortable in sharing with them your concerns.

Many people are concerned about local anaesthetic (injection) needed to numb the tooth / teeth. At Close Dental we use numbing gel before any necessary injection, which will numb the soft tissue area (gums) prior to the placement of the anesthetic. All our practitioners are trained to be patient during this procedure and to manage every patient individually.

Arrange your appointment at a time of the day when you feel at your best and you will always be available. Allow plenty of time so that you can arrive at the practice in a relaxed frame of mind, this always eases the level of your anxiety.

It is usually advisable to have something to eat before attending a dental appointment. If you are having dental care where you cannot eat beforehand, the dentist or a team member will inform you.

Patients often feel better if they are escorted by a friend or family member to their appointment. At times when you are nervous this could be the support you need.

We take things one step at a time. Our team will discuss with you any proposed dental care you require. Once you are feeling more relaxed and confident you can proceed to schedule your appointments.

Don't be afraid to say when you have had enough, you are in control - there is generally no reason to hurry through the dental care unless you are in discomfort.

Discuss a signal with your dentist or hygienist  which means ‘Stop Now” – I need a break, before commencing any procedure. Raising your hand is popular and an ideal indicator to stop the procedure. The dentist and or hygienist will stop immediately. Once you know that you are in control of the situation, you will feel more confident and relaxed.

Listening to music through your appointment is a good way to help you relax. This way you can concentrate on the music and enjoy the surroundings better. Close Dental also has “Virtual Vision” goggles for DVD and Video movie presentation – another fabulous tool for our nervous patient. Nitrous oxide – otherwise known as ‘Happy Gas' is also readily available to provide you with a comfortable dental experience.

As you get to know and trust your dentist, hygienist and other members of our team, you will find your fears will diminish. In time you will gain control over your fears, and dental care at Close Dental can become a normal part of your life.

We look forward to welcoming you.
