The term laser is used loosely. The light is emitted through a powerful 150 Watt Halogen bulb and emits a high intensity blue light (480 – 520 Nanometers wavelength). The system is commonly referred to as a laser although the light itself is diffuse. Most advanced light filtration of any power whitening system ensures patient safety and comfort. Harmful light and heat are filtered out through a coated optical lens and over 12,000 optical fibres. The system operates at a lower temperature than similar products, increasing patient comfort levels and decreasing the risk of developing tooth sensitivity.

Heat lamps (such as Zoom) contain UV light and can cause sunburn to the lips and outer mouth. Preparation time is longer and can therefore be quite uncomfortable. The gums can also be burnt if they are not covered correctly. However Zoom is a well respected system and does produce good results.

Chair-side, cold-light, power whitening accelerator lamp whitens teeth between 2 and 5 shades, with an average improvement of 3 shades, in three consecutive 12 minute sessions.

Home Whitening

The home whitening tray system requires the patient to wear a thin soft plastic custom-made whitening tray in the mouth overnight for several weeks. The trays are self loaded with whitening gel which makes the teeth lighter over a two to three week period. Maximum effect is achieved in three to four weeks. Although the process is slower, the patient has more control over how light the teeth become. There is generally less tooth sensitivity with this technique if Tooth Mousse is applied to the teeth for five nights prior to commencing tray whitening.

Teeth Whitening Health Tips

If we can offer some friendly advice, please do be careful about the type of treatment you choose to undergo. Dental treatments should only be carried out by qualified dental professionals. There are some whitening systems that are suitable for use in the cosmetic sector, and if you choose to do this please be careful to ensure that the Hydrogen Peroxide concentration in the whitening gel does not exceed 5%.

Whilst we are certain that no treatment exceeds Beyondâ„¢ in terms of safety or result factors, you should feel confident using any treatment prescribed by your dentist.

Please also be wary of take home kits that you can buy cheaply over the internet. High percentage gels can often cause severe burning to the lips and the gums. High pH content can cause erosion of enamel, and glycerine can also dehydrate the tooth, rendering it susceptible to short term chipping or cracking.

Acid

Before having your teeth whitened, always ask to be told the pH level of the whitening gel. This is because acid and acid alone will corrode your teeth and gums. If your dentist or whitening technician is unable to answer this question, perhaps consider going elsewhere.

The gels we use are tailored to the pH level of saliva (pH6.2), so as not to cause any damage to the teeth or gums.

Sensitivity

Some people will experience sensitivity after the teeth whitening treatment. This is quite a normal occurrence and generally ceases after 24 hours when the dentine tubes have returned to their normal shape. Most people experience some degree of sensitivity after the procedure.

Gels

The gels we use have actually been proven to be good for your teeth. Our special whitening accelerator kills over 500 of the 600 harmful bacteria in your mouth (helping you to avoid gum disease). The gel and accelerator also help to remove plaque. Although if you have not had a comprehensive examination and professional clean in the last six months then we recommend you do so before your teeth whitening treatment.

Not every patient is suitable for teeth whitening. Your dentist can assess your suitability prior to investing in the procedure.
