Snoring & Sleep Apnoea

Effecting around 40% of the population on a regular basis, snoring is the primary cause of tiredness and can be irritating to other who are surrounded by it and place strain on your happiness and relationships. Snoring and sleep apnoea is also linked to greater health conditions such as high blood pressure and heart disease.

Snoring begins in the airway from the tip of your nose to the back of your throat. When an obstruction in this airway occurs your breath becomes turbulent. Snoring results when this turbulence vibrates on the soft tissue in your mouth, nose or throat cause the snoring noise.
Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is more serious. A relaxing of the tongue and soft palette completely causes their collapse on the back of the throat and block the air flow, this can become serious and result in trouble breathing. As the oxygen flow to the brain halts the body triggers muscle spasm which causes you to awaken from a deep sleep, often not realising what has occurred.

Some of the signs of OSA include:
- Awakening tired and thirsty
- High levels of fatigue throughout the day
- Irritable moods
- Memory problems
- The desire to take naps throughout the day

Although these side effects are minor OSA can lead to more problematic health issues such as a higher occurrence of heart attacks, failure, strokes and other problems. Our experienced staff at Close Dental can make OSA a distant memory. Using customised oral devices we can reposition the jaws, mouth and teeth in a way that prevents this airway blockage in a non-invasive procedure. This device is precisely fitted to be comfortable and is worn at night to stop the regular snoring and ensure a good, quite night’s sleep.
